The Clearwater Valley Rams took some lumps with a young squad on the way to just six wins last season under veteran coach Aaron Skinner. But they’re banking on the growing-up experience to carry them along in the 2015-16 season.

It’ll take a few games into the season before he knows for sure, but Skinner is optimistic that this season’s club may have the right mix of maturity, size and athleticism to make some positive headway in the perennially loaded White Pine League. The Rams return experienced starting players across the court, including junior point guard Trey Pfefferkorn and senior forward Cody Morrow. Returning center Kamm Mangunn and a newcomer in imposing power forward Grant Wallace give the team a balance of size and speed that could add some menace and cause matchup nightmares when the Rams have the ball in their half-court offense. The Rams getting into their offensive set quickly and regularly could give opposing defenses headaches.

Defensively, Clearwater Valley will look to harass opponents on the perimeter before they can get into their offensive sets. Athletic guards will focus on flying around the court to put opposing offenses under pressure and force them to turn the ball over.

The X-factors for Clearwater Valley’s success this season will be similar to those across the state: consistency and staying true to itself. The Rams need to share the ball and play defense for 32 minutes every night in order to take the next step toward being competitive in what is the division’s toughest league year-in, year-out.
