The Bishop Kelly girls basketball program has enjoyed a fair amount of success in recent years.

The Knights won a state title in 2013, and followed that up with a 19-5 campaign last season (they lost their opener at state before winning the consolation title).

With seven seniors returning from last year's team, Bishop Kelly figures to be in position to continue its run of success.

Just how successful this year's players will enjoy remains to be seen, but four games into their season (as of this writing) they are already battle-tested, with wins over Capital and Boise and losses to Centennial and Borah.

Coach Derek McCormick is eager to see how the season will continue to unfold.

“I'm excited to see how our experience plays out,” said McCormick, who is in his ninth season at the helm of the Knights' girls program.

One player whose experience is already pretty well established is Gabi Harrington, last season's Southern Idaho Conference player of the year. The 5-foot-9 guard has committed to play hoops at Montana, but first she will try to earn a state title in her senior season.

Harrington is a proven scorer, but the Knights lost three starters from last year's team, so McCormick will be looking for players other than Harrington to step up offensively. Sophia Adams and Liz Heffner figure to be key contributors.

“We need to find a second and third scoring option,” McCormick said.

That said, McCormick feels like the offense has some upside.

“Quickness is a strength,” he said. “And the team has a knowledge of what we're trying to accomplish.”

That quickness will translate on defense, too, but McCormick will continue to work with his players to try to improve their team rebounding efforts.

All in all, look for the Knights to be serious contenders in a 4A SIC season that is shaping up to be a dandy.

"All of our conference games should be tight," McCormick said.
