Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

The Horseshoe Bend girls basketball team looked set to make a run into the state tournament last season, piling up 15 wins in its first 20 games. The Mustangs lost the last two in the district tournament, however, and missed state. Now they look for redemption in 2015-16 under first-year coach Patrick Goff.

Horseshoe Bend returns three key players, in guard Kate Renfro, wing player Alexis Quijas and forward Aspin Quijas. They will miss departed post player Madison Pratt, who gave the team a force to deal with down low. Instead the Mustangs will go a little smaller and mix things up against opponents. Newcoming freshman guards Julia Black and Syringa Riley will help liven things up on the perimeter as well.

Offensively, perimeter shooters will hope to benefit from a spread floor and inside-out passing game. Establishing penetration and causing panic in the lane will open up kick-outs and open looks from mid- and long-range depths. Defensively, Horseshoe Bend will throw various defenses at opponents depending on which girls are on the floor at a given time. Defense is where the Mustangs hope to hang their collective hats and complement that with transition and spread offense.

Goff believes his team can go as far as the hard work and dedication the players are willing to put in will take them. At the same time, that dedication is one of the strengths of this team in his view, and if that’s the case, good things could be in store for the Mustangs this season.
