Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

Since winning the state championship in 2013, Kamiah has taken a couple of steps backward in the past couple of seasons. And in the White Pine League, it doesn’t take much of a step back to see a team go from top to bottom. For the Kubs, it’s all ascent from here after an 0-20 campaign last season. But they return a solid group of five varsity players, only one of whom is a senior.

Balancing the offense between the five of Lacey Kludt, Chanel Broncheau, Ashley Flerchinger, Chynna Wilcox and Chelsea Robinson will take the pressure off of each individual and free them up to play confidently, and thereby faster and smarter. Still, offensive rebounding and general basketball IQ will be two areas Kamiah hopes to improve upon in 2015-16.

On the defensive side of the floor, Kamiah will continue to work on getting the five-player unit to jell and disrupt opposing offenses. An increase in aggressive pressure defense and rebounding could be key to driving the Kubs forward.

Confidence is everything, especially coming off of a winless season, so early victories could get Kamiah rolling as conference play comes around. First-year coach Abraham Broncheau says the club just wants to work hard, improve, and whatever happens, happens. The Kubs may settle for a quiet season with some wins here or there, but a fast start to the season could prompt them to adjust their expectations.
