Team Preview

The Pirates had an opportunity to defend their championship from the year prior last season, falling just short with a 65-43 loss in the championship game to Lapwai, the same team they had beaten the year prior.

Prairie enters the new season looking for a way to replace the scoring punch that exiting senior Kayla Schumacher contributed. Schumacher was a First Team All-State selection who averaged over 20 points per game and is now playing collegiately at Eastern Oregon.

“We will need kids to step up and take an active offensive role with losing Kayla as our leading scorer and go-to guy in the crunch,” said Head Coach Lori Mader.

Plenty of talent returns to Cottonwood yet again this season, with the team led by Krystin Uhlenkott and Shayla VonBargen.

Uhlenkott will patrol the offense from the perimeter along with Hailey Danly and Chaye Uptmor, while VonBargen will handle much of the inside duties.

Look for the Pirates to push the tempo on both sides of the ball.

“This is a team sport, so I hope to be quick, fast and get up and down the floor,” said Mader.

Defensively Prairie will be trying to find a way to slow down Lapwai, a team that knocked them off all four times the two squads got together last season.

Only one other team knocked off the Pirates, 4A Moscow.

Mader says the team needs to be more in tune with each other on the defensive end, with the overall speed being a main strength.

Her main reason for excitement for the coming season is a simple one.

“The ability to coach great kids with great attitudes,” stated Mader.

After losing their leading scorer from last season in Schumacher, the Pirates x-factor in the coming year will be how the remaining players come together and step into increased roles.
