Team Preview:

There were ups and downs to the 2014 season for the Borah Lions. Rousing wins over long-time rivals Boise High and Timberline marked the high points, back-to-back difficult losses to powerhouses Bishop Kelly and Capital illustrated the not-so-high points.

In the end, it was a 4-5 season for head coach Darren Corpus and his Lions team, a two-win improvement over the 2013 season but not enough to reach the 5A State Playoffs. To continue that improvement and return to the postseason, Corpus lists a common theme offensively and defensively.
The run game.

That doesn’t mean that the Lions are going to line up, double-tight, with a full-house backfield and run the ball up the middle 40 times every Friday night. In fact, Corpus thinks his team, with Hayden Brown returning at quarterback and honorable-mention All-SIC receiver Chris Hugon back as well as the athletic Jake Paulin, will provide a lot of explosiveness in the passing game.

But it’s an age-old axiom in football. The ability to consistently run the football on offense and stop the run on defense is vital to winning.

Offensively, Borah returns starting offensive linemen Nick Eden and Mitchel Collins but lost running back Austin Phimmasone so there are roles open; chances for players to embrace opportunity to bring consistency to the team’s running attack. A strong, consistent run game will only make the team’s passing attack more potent.

Defensively, the pieces appear to be in place for Borah to field a sound defense. The team returns two starters along the defensive front (seniors Lucas Langus and Jaden Cavender) but Corpus’ squad returns three starting linebackers – Jace Forrey, Mark Jerome and Hunter Inman – to what should be a quick and disruptive defense. Couple that with three returning starters in the defensive backfield in Tyler Goodsell, Chris Sallard and All=Conference performer Anes Srna and that gives Corpus and his staff eight starters back from a defense that held the opposition to two touchdowns or less in each of the team’s four wins last season.

The Lions open on the road with a pair of 4A opponents, Columbia and Kuna, before playing six consecutive games at Boise’s Dona Larsen Park. Borah is one of four Boise metro high schools that use Dona Larsen as a home field so, whether playing as “home” or “visitor” on the scoreboard, it still reads as six games in a row on its home field.

A fast, veteran defense … a returning field-general at quarterback … six straight games in its home environment.

We’re not predicting the school’s first state title since 1981, but we are saying this – don’t sleep on Borah this season. The Lions could be a big factor in the 5A SIC race.
