Winning. It's the Dietrich way.

After the boys basketball team brought home a state title for the first time since 1966 in March, the football team is hungry to add some hardware to the collection in similar fashion.

For those wondering, the last time the Blue Devils won a state title for football was also 1966.

That was a good year for the boys in blue.

Fast forward to the fall of 2016 and things are looking good for Dietrich to once again be competitive on the gridiron, following a season in which the school finished in a three-way tie at the top of the 1AD2 Sawtooth West Conference.

With the return of Conference Player of the Year Garrett Astle this season, third year Head Coach Mike Torgerson has a weapon at his disposal out of the offensive backfield and in the linebacker core who stands out on the field. Astle is also a team leader who brings valuable experience as a senior.

Astle will be joined in the backfield by quarterback Jake Smith and fellow running back Porter Robertson.

Sound familiar?

The senior trio has been outstanding on the football field as well as on the hardwood, with each knowing the sacrifice it takes to win.

"Sacrifice brings banners," said Torgerson. "We have had the best summer preparing for the year."

Style-wise it should be a fun offense to watch, with playmakers all over the place and an up-tempo pace.

"We will be bringing the 'controlled chaos' from the basketball court to the football field," added Torgerson.

To maximize the potential of the unit the Blue Devils will need to reduce turnovers, something which destroyed any chance the team had in its season-ending 52-14 loss in the state playoffs at North Gem last year, a game in which Dietrich turned the ball over 11 times.

On the other side of the ball the focus is simple.

"We are focusing on stopping the run," said Torgerson.

The loss of Alex Hurtado from each of the lines will hurt, however Raygn Robertson could potentially be one of the guys who might see some time on at least the offensive line, adding some depth to the front.

Late season matchups with Carey and Lighthouse Christian will most likely again determine the order of the final conference standings, as each group looks to continue the momentum from last season.

Dietrich begins 2016 with a road affair on August 26 at Rockland.
