Team Preview:
Written By: Sven Alskog

Major progression has been shown within the Garden Valley football program over the last couple of years, with plenty of talent coming back that appears ready to lead the Wolverines towards a playoff spot.

It was a hard-luck finish to 2017 which saw the team just miss out on a berth despite a 6-2 overall record.

A really strong senior class led by Conference Offensive Player of the Year Darell Lindstrom and skill position threats Trystan Knox and Javier Fuhriman has graduated, leaving a returning core of six players that received some form of All-Conference recognition with increased responsibilities this year.

When Garden Valley has the ball, Gage Peterson will be a pivotal piece out of the backfield, with Covy Kelly and Bryce Edwards a couple of the receiving threats with good varsity experience.

Eighth year head coach Jason Yearsley had one of the more explosive offensive attacks in the state last season with Lindstrom at the patrols. The Wolverines scored over 40 points on six separate occasions.

One of the big tasks for Yearsley and the coaching staff will be to incorporate a new quarterback into the mix. If the new signal-caller can fit in quickly, the rest of the pieces are in place to be quite dangerous.

Richard Lindstrom, Ryan Briggs and Edwards will have large responsibilities on defense. The hope is to remain as stingy as the unit was a year ago on a weekly basis. Aside from the two losses for Garden Valley, the team held every opponent to 32 or less. In the losses to Salmon River and Tri-Valley, the Wolverines yielded 46 and 56 points.

Rival Horseshoe Bend drops down to join the 1AD2 Long Pin Conference this season, which should make for a wild race for playoff spots. Tri-Valley lost lots of talent from its state runner-up team, while Salmon River returns do-everything talent Canyon Harper. Council and Cascade have lots of youth, but appear to each be making forward progress.

Garden Valley begins 2018 at home in week one against Wilder before heading to district four for back-to-back road games at Oakley and Glenns Ferry in weeks two and three.
