Since winning the 1AD1 state championship in 2013, Hagerman has not had a winning season, something new head coach Joe Keeney hopes to change this year as the Pirates drop down to the 1AD2 classification.

Keeney takes over for Mark Kress, who led the school to that championship victory in the 2013 season.

Talented fixtures on the field such as Caleb Owsley and Terrell Wise have also graduated, leaving a different looking team on the field.

Fortunately for Hagerman, pieces like Derek Herrington, Bryant Osborne and Chris Belem should give the team a nice combination of size, strength and speed.

Herrington is listed as 6-feet-5-inches and 200 pounds. In the smallest classification in Idaho he should be a matchup problem at linebacker and on the line for the Pirates.

Osborne also provides good size on each line at over 200 pounds, while Belem leads the way in the receiving core and in the secondary for Hagerman.

It will be a young group, but the team is looking forward to the challenges that arise as a result of that.

“We have no seniors this year, so we are relying on our guys to step up and come together as a unit,” added Keeney.

Only four players exited from the team that won four games last year, so that should provide plenty of optimism to be able to immediately challenge for a playoff berth in year one in the new conference.

Hagerman won each of its games against 1AD2 opponents in 2017, knocking off Castleford 46-8 and doubling up Murtaugh 84-42. The Red Devils were a playoff team last season and the two teams square off in their season finale on October 19 in Murtaugh. That could be a big game in the grand scheme of things for playoff positioning.

Without Owsley and Wise, the Pirates will have to re-establish the physicality and skill brought to the field each week from that duo with some new faces.

The first chance to see Keaney’s Hagerman team will come on August 24 at home against Dietrich. On August 31 the Pirates welcome in Castleford for a game that will be broadcast live and free on IdahoSports.com.
